Dear UK Prime Minister,
🍾 Congratulations on the new role and good luck 🍀 You have inherited a difficult set of books: debt above 95% of GDP, £111 billion a year going out on debt interest alone, and growth of just 1.1%. Nobody would call that an easy start.
As an accountant, I spend my days helping small businesses make sense of numbers like these. So, respectfully, five things that would help the people I sit across the desk from every week:
1. Pick a fiscal rule and stick to it. Certainty is the cheapest form of stimulus available, and business owners can plan around almost anything except constant change.
2. Remove the cliff edges. Good businesses genuinely turn down work to stay under the VAT threshold. That is growth we are choosing not to have.
3. Reform business rates properly, rather than discounting them a sector at a time.
4. Give the smallest traders a break on quarterly digital filing. A self-employed plasterer does not have a finance department, he has a van.
5. Be honest about the triple lock and fuel duty early, while the goodwill lasts.
None of this makes for a memorable speech, but the country doesn't need another glossy growth strategy. It needs someone willing to open the books and start reconciling and I hope you're that person.
Wishing you success,

P.S. If you need the numbers explained, my rates are considerably lower than the bond market's.
