Employers, Are You Ready for the New Tax Year? 👀

As the 2025/26 tax year draws to a close, employers should start preparing for the key payroll tasks that come with the transition into a new tax year.

If you run a payroll, there are a few important steps to complete to ensure you remain compliant with HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) requirements. The current tax year ends on 5 April 2026, and the new tax year begins on 6 April 2026.

Fraud Awareness - Simple Steps to Protect Your Money!

Fraud now accounts for around 40% of crime in the UK, making it one of the most common threats facing individuals and businesses today. The challenge is that fraud doesn’t always look suspicious. In fact, it often appears as part of everyday business; an email from a supplier, a message about a payment, or a phone call from someone claiming to be your bank.

Because fraudsters rely on deception rather than force, awareness is one of the most powerful tools you have to protect yourself and your organisation. Knowing what to look out for and taking a few simple precautions can significantly reduce the risk.

If you run a small VAT-registered business, the way you calculate VAT can affect more than just your tax bill. It can influence your cash flow, admin time and the complexity of your bookkeeping 📕 🧮

Many businesses simply stick with the standard VAT method without realising there may be an alternative that’s easier to manage.

One option worth considering is the VAT Flat Rate Scheme, which can simplify VAT calculations and in some cases, even improve your margins!

With the new tax year fast approaching, many businesses are beginning to prepare for the changes introduced by Making Tax Digital (MTD).

From April, sole traders and landlords earning more than £50,000 will be required to submit quarterly updates to HMRC instead of relying solely on an annual tax return.

Around 900,000 individuals are expected to join the system in the first phase. If you are affected, this represents a significant change in how you manage your tax affairs, so getting organised early is key!

Reflecting on 2025...and looking ahead to 2026!

As we enter into a New Year, it’s a natural time to pause and think about how your business has performed over the past year.

For many, some things will have gone better than expected. Perhaps a new income stream grew quickly, or a customer relationship became more valuable than you imagined. At the same time, rising costs, recruitment challenges or changing customer needs may have made other areas more difficult.

Beyond the numbers, you may also be thinking about how well your business supported your wider ambitions. Did it grow in the way you hoped? Did it give you the freedom, stability or flexibility to take advantage of new opportunities? These questions often highlight where your business worked well for you and where it may have held you back.
