Making Tax Digital (MTD) is coming… are you ready? 📊

MTD for Income Tax will change how self-employed individuals and landlords report their income to HMRC.

📅 Key dates:
• From April 2026 — Income over £50,000
• From April 2027 — Income over £30,000

Instead of one yearly tax return, you’ll need to:
✔ Keep digital records
✔ Send quarterly updates
✔ Use software (such as Xero)

💡 Top tips to prepare:
• Keep your records up to date
• Use a separate business bank account
• Store receipts digitally
• Ask questions early if you’re unsure

We’re already helping affected clients get ready — and we’re here to support you too.

📩 Get in touch if you’d like to check whether MTD applies to you.

Statutory Sick Pay rules may be changing — and it could affect small businesses.

Currently, SSP is paid from Day 4 of sickness.
Under proposed reforms, employees could receive sick pay from Day 1.

For employers, this could mean:
• Higher payroll costs
• More short-term absence costs
• Reviewing sickness policies

While the changes aren’t fully implemented yet, it’s important for businesses to start preparing.

If you employ staff and want to understand how this could affect your payroll and costs, we’re here to help.

One of the most common messages we get is:
“Nothing changed… so why is my tax bill higher?” 😬

Tax is based on profit, timing and rules — not just how busy you felt or how much was in the bank.

Understanding why it went up is the first step to planning better for the next year.

📩 If your tax bill caught you off guard, we can talk it through.

One of the most common questions we get 👇
“How should I pay myself from my business?”

The answer depends on how you’re set up:

➡️ Limited company director
The most tax-efficient approach is usually:
• A small salary (often around the personal allowance level)
• Then dividends on top
This keeps tax and National Insurance lower while staying compliant.

➡️ Self-employed / sole trader
You don’t pay yourself a “salary”.
You take drawings from the business, and tax is calculated on your profits, not what you withdraw.

The key difference?
Knowing what you owe before HMRC tells you.

Paying yourself properly =
✔️ No nasty tax surprises
✔️ Better cash flow
✔️ Confidence in what you can actually spend

If you’re unsure whether you’re doing this in the best way, it’s worth checking — small changes can make a big difference.

The Self Assessment deadline always creeps up faster than expected. A little prep now can save a lot of stress later — and make sure you’re not overpaying tax.

If you’re doing it yourself this year, take it step by step and don’t forget the small things — they add up 👀

Most self-employed people think £312 is the home office allowance.

It isn’t.
It’s just a flat rate shortcut — and for many people, it massively undervalues what they’re actually allowed to claim.

If you work from home and:
• use a room in your home for business
• work from home most days
• have rising household bills
…there’s a very good chance you’re underclaiming.

Here at Tilleys we have just come across a really good app called TaxMate that calculates actual home office usage properly, instead of relying on a one-size-fits-all number.

For some people, the difference is hundreds of pounds every year.
