💡 A cash flow forecast isn’t just about what’s coming in.

It’s easy to think of cash flow forecasting as simply predicting when money will arrive in the bank. But effective forecasting is also about controlling spending – and that doesn’t mean approving every single line item.

👉 True control is about understanding the overall cost structure of your business:
• Aligning large planned expenditures with your funding and income cycles.
• Using budgets to create clear boundaries and priorities.
• Giving teams accountability for their spend within agreed limits.

Trying to approve every individual expense? That’s micromanagement, not control.

Good budgeting gives people autonomy while protecting your cash position. It allows leaders to make informed decisions, spot issues early, and adjust plans without firefighting.

🧩 Cash flow forecasting + budgeting = sustainable, confident decision-making.

Is your forecast helping you steer your business, or just telling you when the money will run out?

🧾 The Unsexy Side of Business That Drives Success

We all love to focus on the exciting parts of our business—innovation, growth, client wins, creative breakthroughs. But unless you invest time in your administrative foundations, you’re likely to spend your days chasing your tail.

✨ Want smooth operations and strong performance? You need structure.

✅ Approval systems must be clearly documented and consistently followed. If nobody knows what “approved” means—or who’s supposed to do it—you’re already on the back foot.

📦 Purchasing processes should be aligned with your KPIs. Without good oversight, spending gets sloppy, suppliers slip standards, and no one notices until it’s too late.

🚚 Goods in and goods out shouldn’t be a bottleneck. If your logistics rely on superhero staff just to get through a Tuesday, you’ve got a problem. Your systems should do the heavy lifting.

💡 Good administration isn’t bureaucracy. It’s the bedrock that enables your business to scale, serve, and succeed.

Let’s stop treating admin like a necessary evil and start seeing it for what it really is: a competitive advantage.

💡 Controlling your finances doesn’t mean micromanaging every payment.

For SMEs, real financial control comes from setting clear budgets and staying laser-focused on your cash flow.

And let’s be clear — cash flow isn’t just a record of money in and out.
It’s your early warning system.
It’s your decision-making tool.

When you plan your spending ahead of time, you don’t just see what’s happening — you see what’s coming. That gives you the chance to make smart decisions before problems land:
✔️ Adjust outgoings
✔️ Chase payments
✔️ Secure funding — in time

🧾 Budgets give you direction.
💷 Cash flow gives you visibility.
🧠 Together, they give you control.

I love AI.
I love how it brings deep expertise to areas outside my own, and how it saves me hours when I’m researching or exploring new ideas.

But — and it’s a big one — it’s not perfect.

On Friday, I was writing a fairly complex formula in Excel and decided to check Microsoft Copilot for ideas. Even after uploading part of the spreadsheet, the formula it suggested didn’t work.

It was a good reminder:
AI is an incredible tool, but it’s not infallible.
Sometimes, there’s just no substitute for human logic, context, and experience!

Too many businesses are juggling disconnected systems—one over here for CRM, another over there for ERP, and none of them talk to each other.

But it doesn’t have to be that way.

You can build a seamless, integrated setup—from front-end CRM to back-end ERP—fully linked to your cloud accounting platform (like Xero). The more you automate, the more accurate your records become.

The added bonus? Your team is freed from repetitive, manual tasks. That means better use of staff time and a big boost in employee satisfaction—because nobody enjoys the drudgery.

Firstly, I am not affiliated to Dext in anyway!

However, it is such a lovely solution for small and medium sized businesses.

I was taught bookkeeping on a hand written ledger! Things have moved on since then and the modern solutions are well worth investing in. With Dext, you use your phone to take a picture of the invoice or receipt. Then upload. From there either you or your bookkeeper assigns the relevant nominal codes, checks that the figures have been extracted properly and sends it across to your accounts package. You can then put the receipt in the bin!
Packages like this make remote bookkeeping easy and they all have a free trial so that you can see if it will work for you.
If you want help setting it up or discovering how it works, let me know!

Find the solution that works for you and start growing your business.

The “big 3” (Sage, Xero and Quickbooks) cloud versions of accounting software are without doubt cut down versions. However they do provide a remarkable flexibility and freedom for business users. If you combine them with software such as Dext (formerly Receipt Bank), daily bookkeeping can easily be done remotely. Business owners can issue sales invoices and keep a check on cash flow anywhere they have an internet connection.

Success! A client was very unhappy that Sage had doubled the price of his desktop software. We tried various on line solutions and he settled on Sage cloud as it was familiar to him.
Today I checked the migration and we are up and running . A saving of ÂŁ35 per month with the added benefit that he can now access his accounts anywhere he has internet access and his bank account is reporting in real time.
