Fake HMRC scams are getting more believable by the day,

We’ve had clients recently making us aware of messages/emails that look genuine at first glance, but are actually scammers trying to access bank details and personal information. We know scam calls are also on the rise too.

Please slow down before clicking or responding to anything, especially messages designed to make you panic quickly.

A few reminders:
• HMRC won’t threaten action over text
• HMRC won’t ask for bank details by text message
• Don’t answer questions on a phone call , say you will call back , and call HMRC directly yourself (numbers on their website for different services)
• Always log into your HMRC account directly through GOV.UK

Small business owners already have enough stress without scam messages thrown into the mix 🙃

the freedom is amazing honestly…

freedom to work from anywhere
freedom to build something for yourself
freedom to do the school runs, gym sessions and random coffee trips in between work

but nobody tells you the “freedom” also comes with:
replying to emails at 10pm
checking your phone on holiday
saying “just one more thing” 14 times a night
somehow doing 150 hours in a 7 day week

wouldn’t change it though 🫶🏼

You might not feel like you’re “smashing it” every day…

but if any of these 10 sound familiar, you’re doing way better than you think !

Running a business doesn’t always look like fancy offices, six-figure launches and viral reels.
Sometimes it looks like:
repeat customers
raising your prices without guilt
actually enjoying what you’ve built (most of the time)

So if you’ve been waiting for a sign that your business is successful, this is it.

Have a full time job and work for yourself on the side? This one’s for you!

Each year your employer will send you a P60, this shows the tax you have paid in the previous tax year (6th April - 5th April)

You will need to include the figures from your P60 on your self assessment tax return you submit for any self employed income

You only get one Tax Free Personal Allowance so if you use this in your full time job, you will be liable for paying any due tax on the income you receive separately 🙃

One of the most common questions we get asked is
“how do I pay myself a wage?”

There are different ways this can be done depending on if you are a Sole Trader or Director of a Limited Company

Yes there’s lots of Instagram videos on how to pay yourself ### amount tax free as a limited company but they usually fail to mention corporation tax when putting out these videos!

Make sure you check the most tax efficient way to draw your money depending on your structure so you have no tax surprises!

Super easy receipt hack!

Having an email purely for receipts/ invoices makes life MUCH easier and it’s super quick to find what you’re looking for .

For next level receipt keeping ,if you use a invoice/receipt portal, set up an auto forward rule so you don’t even have to remember to upload it later ✌🏼

P60, what is it and what to do with it…

ℹ️ If you’re employed you will receive a P60 , if you also work self employed/have a side hustle you will need to include the figures on your tax return

ℹ️ If you’re a sole trader you will not receive a P60, however if you are a director of a limited company and draw a salary then you will

ℹ️ Your P60 from your employer shows the tax you have already paid via PAYE, which is why if you have self employed work this will need to be included on your tax return to show tax already paid

ℹ️ You should always check your P60 to make sure it’s correct incase of any wrong tax codes

Hope this helps 🤓

VAT… the thing everyone nods along to but secretly hopes doesn’t come up in conversation…

Here’s the simple version :
If your business is VAT registered, you’re basically collecting tax on behalf of HMRC

There are two common ways to do it:
1. Standard VAT Scheme (the “normal” way)
You:
Charge VAT on your sales (usually 20%)
Reclaim VAT on your business purchases
👉 You only pay HMRC the difference
(what you charged customers minus what you paid out)
Good for:
Businesses with lots of expenses (because you can reclaim that VAT back )

2.Flat Rate Scheme (the “simpler but sneaky” one)
You:
Still charge customers 20% VAT
BUT instead of working it all out… you pay HMRC a fixed percentage of your turnover (this % depends on your industry)
👉 You don’t usually reclaim VAT on purchases (except big assets)
Good for:
Service based businesses with low expenses
(you might actually keep a small portion of the VAT 👀)

So what’s the actual difference?

Standard is more accurate, more admin, better if you spend a lot
Flat Rate is simpler, less admin, better if your costs are low

How it affects your business:
Impacts your pricing (because VAT gets added)
Affects your profit (especially if you pick the wrong scheme)
Changes how much admin/bookkeeping you’ll need

It can either save you money… or quietly cost you 👀

Honestly, not every business should be on flat rate just because it sounds “easier” and not everyone benefits from standard either.

This is one of those “it depends” areas… but getting it right can make a big difference over a year.

If you’re VAT registered (or about to be), this is your sign to double check you’re on the right scheme 👀

Also if you made it all the way down here 👏🏻 thanks for reading!

the essentials to my (Millie) life 💼

first things first… slippers are non-negotiable. if i’m in the office, i’m comfy. that’s the rule 😆

To and from meetings,my bag might not scream influencer or pilates princess… but it does scream “prepared for anything” (and somehow still can’t find a pen when I need one).

and on some days… there’s the extra gym bag.
the plan? a full hour of “me time”
the reality? replying to messages between sets and leaving needing another coffee ✌🏼🙃

there you go algorithm… a personal post. look at me trying 👀

Quick poll - do you work in your slippers or would you work in your slippers if you could?😆

new tax year and a fresh start… but also a gentle reminder to sort last year out first 🫠

if you’re a small business owner, now is the time to:
– get your bookkeeping up to date
– understand what tax you owe
– set better habits for the new tax year
– and stop leaving everything until january panic mode 👍🏼

It’s also a good time to check if you should be registered for the new making tax digital roll out for income tax , you need to register and comply if your GROSS income was £50k or more in the 24/25 tax year and you’re a sole trader or landlord
