Did you know HMRC has increased business mileage! it’s good news for anyone claiming back their travel this tax year
From 6 April 2026, HMRC has increased the mileage rate for cars and vans from 45p to 55p per mile for the first 10,000 miles. That’s a solid boost for sole traders, limited companies, and anyone logging business journeys

🚗 What this means for you

• You can now claim 55p per mile on business travel (first 10,000 miles)
• Anything over 10,000 miles stays at 25p per mile
• If you were paid at the old 45p rate earlier in the year, your employer can top up the extra 10p per mile tax‑free
• Sole traders: this uplift increases your allowable expenses, reducing taxable profit

CIS sole traders, do you know which types of income count towards the £50,000 threshold for MTD ITSA which HMRC is mandating from April 2026?

HMRC are currently looking at your 2024/25 total income to decide whether you qualify.
It’s not just your CIS income, they assess your full qualifying income, including any other self employment or property income you may have

🧒📘 As a bookkeeper, I spend my days making sense of numbers… but kids’ clothes prices? Even I can’t reconcile those.

They grow overnight, need a whole new wardrobe, and somehow the prices keep creeping up even though kids’ clothes are VAT free. The maths simply isn’t mathing.

Mine are getting so tall now I’m starting to question whether it’s financially sensible to keep them in the kids’ section for as long as humanly possible… not to dodge VAT, but because I refuse to pay adult prices for someone who still can’t find their shoes

Between inflation, growth spurts, and the speed they outgrow everything, keeping them dressed should count as a full set of CPD hours.

Any other parents running the numbers?
