We’ve had more requests coming in about Making Tax Digital, so here’s a simple breakdown ahead of April 2026.

There’s been a lot of confusion around Making Tax Digital (MTD), so we wanted to clarify what it actually means for sole traders and small limited companies.

Sole traders
From April 2026, Making Tax Digital for Income Tax will apply only to sole traders with annual turnover above £50,000.
If your turnover is below £50,000, nothing changes.
Even once the next phase is introduced from April 2027, those with turnover below £30,000 will still be exempt.

Those above the threshold will need to:
• Keep digital records
• Submit quarterly updates to HMRC
• Complete a final annual declaration

If you’re under the threshold, you will continue to submit one annual tax return, just as you do now.

Small limited companies
There are no changes in April 2026 for corporation tax.
Making Tax Digital for Corporation Tax has not yet been introduced, and there is no confirmed start date.

The key takeaway
For most small businesses, particularly local sole traders and micro-businesses, nothing changes in April 2026. MTD is being introduced gradually and only affects higher-earning sole traders at this stage.
