After what felt like approximately 400 years at 45p a mile HMRC has finally increased the approved mileage rate for cars and vans. From 6th April 202, if you use your own car or van for business journeys, the rate is 🚗 55p per mile for the first 10,000 business miles 🚗 25p per mile after that and yes the 55p rate has been backdated to 6th April 2026 even though the change wasn't announced until later. One little reminder though it's business mileage and your normal commute between home and your permanent workplace doesn't count! As always keep a mileage log. Dates, journeys, destinations and the business reason for the trip because “I definitely drove somewhere for work at some point in June” isn't quite enough for the accounts!

Well… sometimes but we're accountants not detectives! 🕵️‍♀️That £86 payment to Amazon? It could be printer ink, stationery and something completely legitimate for the business or it could be a coffee machine, a dog bed and three books for your summer holiday. The bank statement isn't giving anything away! And while we're on the subject of receipts… we need the actual receipt or invoice showing what you've bought and the relevant details. That little card machine slip saying “£47.83 – APPROVED” is lovely confirmation that your card worked… but that's about all it's telling us! Keeping proper receipts and good records might feel like a bit of a faff but it means we can make sure things are treated correctly and that you're claiming everything you're entitled to. So please keep the receipts!
