If an accountant is promising you huge tax savings before they really understand your business, be careful.

There usually isn’t a magic tax trick. If something sounds too good to be true, it often is.

Good advice is not about making impossible promises. It is about making sure you are structured properly, paying no more tax than you need to, staying compliant and protecting the business and wealth you have already built.

At JMT Chartered Accountants, we would rather give you the right answer than the exciting answer.

No gimmicks. No unrealistic promises. Just qualified, commercial advice built around your business.

One of the comments I hear most from new clients is:

"I wish I'd done it sooner."

Not because we promise the impossible, but because they quickly notice the difference.

At JMT Chartered Accountants, we focus on three things:

• A slick, responsive service.

• Your work handled directly by experienced, professionally qualified accountants.

• Practical, commercial advice that helps you make better decisions

No endless hand-offs to junior staff. No waiting weeks for answers. No unnecessary jargon.

Just experienced professionals who know your business, communicate clearly and get things done.

If you've ever wondered what the difference is between accountants, perhaps it's time to find out.

Nearly 2 million more people are now paying higher-rate tax.

Frozen tax bands are quietly pulling more salaries and dividends into higher rates.

Dividend tax has risen too, with the higher rate now 35.75% above the £500 allowance.

Of course, we still need money to live today. But what about tomorrow?

Are you taking too much now and losing more to tax?

Could part of that income go into a pension?

Is your salary and dividend mix still right?

Are you using both spouses’ allowances and ISAs?

The question to ask your accountant is:

“How do I balance the income I need today with the most tax-efficient plan for my future?”

With thresholds still frozen, doing nothing is a decision too.

A change in prime minister could mean a change in tax policy.

Capital Gains Tax rises are not confirmed, and Andy Burnham has already been warned against going too far.

But Labour has looked at this area before, and the idea of taxing gains more like income has not gone away.
That uncertainty alone is enough to make landlords, investors and business owners nervous.

If you are thinking about selling a property, restructuring, or planning an exit, don’t make rushed decisions based on headlines.

Get the numbers modelled properly, understand the timing, and make a calm decision based on facts.

At JMT Chartered Accountants, we can help you review the tax position before you act.

Big changes are coming to Companies House accounts filing from April 2028.

Small companies and micro-entities will have to file profit and loss accounts with Companies House, although they will be able to opt out of having that information published on the public register.

That is an important distinction.

The information will still be filed and will still be available to Companies House, HMRC and law enforcement, but it may not necessarily be visible publicly if the company chooses to opt out of publication.

Companies House has also confirmed that all companies will need to file accounts using commercial software.

Web and paper filing for accounts will close, abridged accounts will be removed and audit exemption statements will be strengthened.

The implementation date has been pushed back from April 2027 to April 2028, which gives companies more time to prepare.

For many small companies this will be a significant change, particularly those still preparing very basic accounts or filing directly through Companies House.

It is worth reviewing systems early and making sure accounting records, software and year-end processes are ready well before the deadline.

This is not something to leave until 2028.

A couple of hours this morning catching up with clients, answering questions and helping a few businesses move things forward before the day really gets started.

One of the things I enjoy most about running my own practice is being available when clients need advice, wherever I happen to be.

A few conversations, some guidance and decisions made, and everyone can get on with running their businesses.

For now, it's coffee, sunshine and a bit more work.

Later, it'll be time to explore, relax and enjoy some quality time with the boys. ☀️

Not a bad office for the morning

Tax year end is approaching. A few things business owners may want to review before 5 April.

With the end of the tax year approaching, it may be worth reviewing a few areas to ensure you are making the most of available reliefs and allowances.

• Dividends. Dividend tax rates are to increase from April 2026, so it may be worth reviewing whether dividends should be taken before the year end.

• Pension contributions. Company pension contributions can often be a very tax efficient way to extract profits while building retirement savings.

• Capital expenditure. If the business is planning to purchase equipment, machinery or vehicles, it may be worth considering whether to bring this forward to utilise capital allowances.

• Director’s loan accounts. Reviewing any overdrawn balances before the year end can help avoid potential tax charges.

• Use of allowances. Ensuring personal allowances and other available reliefs are being used effectively.

Every situation is different, but a quick review before the end of the tax year can sometimes make a meaningful difference.

If you would like us to take a look at your position before the year end, feel free to get in touch.

⛷️ Running a business is like Olympic skiing.

On TV it looks effortless.

Graceful.

World-class.

In reality?

You’re hurtling downhill at 70mph, slightly out of control, praying you don’t miss a gate
while pretending this was the strategy all along.

The gold medal isn’t for perfection.

It’s for staying upright long enough to finish the run.
