With MTD being introduced in April 2026, we thought it best to remind our clients of the new penalty system being introduced with it. Fortunately, the penalty points system has been deferred for the first year of MTD, allowing a bit of leeway, as any issues with the migration over to MTD are ironed out.

Our useful summary gives clear information so you know what to expect if you aren't hitting the submission or payment deadlines. If you feel like you are going to be affected by MTD, and are worried you may rack up some of these penalty points, please contact us today to see how we can help.

With Making Tax Digital right around the corner, more and more Sole Traders & Landlords will be relying on software such as Xero to aid them in getting those ever-looming quarterly submissions in on time. With that being said, many people will have never used a software like Xero before in their day-to-day running of a business.

This presentation shows a step-by-step guide on how to upload a new purchase receipt to Xero, from the ios Xero App. This will slowly become the new minimum expectancy of businesses within MTD, so even if you are not affected in the 2026/27 tax year, it may be worth looking into software like this, sooner rather than later.

Supporting Children, Supporting Families. But Who Should Carry the Cost?

One of the most talked about announcements in the latest budget is the removal of the two child cap. A change positioned as a step toward lifting more children out of poverty.

For many families, this policy will offer much needed breathing room. It recognises that no child chooses the circumstances theyโ€™re born into, and that supporting the earliest years of life can create better outcomes for society as a whole.

But alongside this compassionate aim sits a difficult financial reality. The change is expected to cost around ยฃ3 billion, and it comes at a time when tax rises are already affecting working households across the UK.

That raises some important questions for all of us:
๐Ÿ’ญ Is it fair for the working taxpayer to shoulder much of the cost of this change?
๐Ÿ’ญ How should the government balance social responsibility with financial sustainability?
๐Ÿ’ญ Can we support families without adding further pressure on those who are already stretched?

There are no easy answers, only a conversation that needs to be had with empathy, honesty, and an understanding of how different groups will experience the impact.

What do you think?
Is the long-term benefit of reducing child poverty worth the immediate financial cost? Or should the funding be found in different ways?

โ„๏ธThresholds Frozenโ€ฆ Again โ„๏ธ
Because apparently time moves forward, but our thresholds do not.

As many of you have likely seen, Thresholds will remain frozen until April 2031!
(meaning the current thresholds have been in place since Squid Games released on Netflix and we were all singing sea shanties on TikTok)

On the bright side, at least we donโ€™t have to waste time recalculating anything. Consistency is important, right?
On the not-so-bright sideโ€ฆ well, everything else.

While the cost of living, operational expenses, and basically every number on every bill continues to rise, itโ€™s comforting to know that thresholds are staying right where they are, snug in their icy slumber.

If nothing else, at least weโ€™re all getting really good at working within these "unchanged" parameters.

Cheers to another year of frozen progressโ€”literally.

๐Ÿ’ผ The 2025 UK Budget has delivered a major shake-up for salary-sacrifice pension contributions. From April 2029, only the first ยฃ2,000 per year of pension contributions via salary sacrifice will be exempt from National Insurance. Anything above that โ€” however generous the contribution โ€” will be subject to both employee and employer NI.

What this means
๐Ÿ“ˆ Potential for higher NIC cost to both Employee and Employer.
โœ๏ธ Additional admin to keep track of the cap.
๐Ÿ›‘ Employees will lose the ability to restructure salary that reduces their tax impact.

Whilst this change does not come into effect until April 2029, businesses need to start thinking of the wider financial and administrative implications ahead and how this will impact their business.

If you need any help or advice on salary sacrifice pensions, or payroll processing, our dedicated payroll team are always ready to help.
