🚗 HMRC Mileage Allowance Increase Confirmed 👀

HMRC has announced that the approved mileage allowance rate will increase from 45p to 55p per mile, backdated to April 2026.

For limited company directors and employees using their personal vehicle for business travel, this means you can reimburse yourself more tax-efficiently through your company.

✅ No income tax
✅ No National Insurance
✅ Allowable business expense for the company

Example:
🚘 10,000 business miles
Old rate: £4,500 tax-free
New rate: £5,500 tax-free

That’s an extra £1,000 simply from the mileage rate increase.

📌 Important reminders:
• Only genuine business travel qualifies
• Commuting to your normal workplace does not count
• Keep accurate mileage records and journey logs

This is one of the easiest tax-efficient claims many business owners overlook.

Starting out as a new business ? Here’s what you may need to register for 👇

✔️ Register as self-employed (HMRC) or set up a limited company
✔️ Register for Self Assessment tax return (if self-employed)
✔️ Get a National Insurance number (if not already held)
✔️ Check VAT registration (£90,000+ turnover threshold)
✔️ Public liability insurance (often required for client work)
✔️ Professional indemnity insurance (if giving advice or technical services)
✔️ Register with relevant trade bodies or certifications (if required for your field)
✔️ Set up a business bank account (especially for limited companies)

🏢 Business rates (important one):
Only applies if you use a separate commercial property or workspace (e.g. shop, office, workshop, unit).
If you work from home, you usually don’t pay business rates — but you may pay a small portion via council tax depending on usage.

Getting these basics right early helps you stay compliant, professional, and ready to grow 👍 Contact us for advice and support !

🤔 SOLE TRADER OR LIMITED COMPANY — WHICH IS BETTER?

This is one of the most common questions I get from:
💅 Nail techs
💄 Beauticians
📱 Freelancers / Digital marketers
💼 Small business owners

And the answer is:
👉 There’s no “one-size-fits-all” option

Each structure has different pros & cons 👇

---

# # 💼 SOLE TRADER

✅ Simple and easy to start
✅ Lower accounting costs
✅ Less paperwork

❌ Tax can become higher as income grows
❌ No separation between personal & business finances
❌ Fewer tax planning opportunities

👉 Best if you:
- Are just starting out
- Have lower income
- Want to keep things simple

---

# # 🏢 LIMITED COMPANY

✅ Can be more tax efficient
✅ Looks more professional
✅ Separates personal & business finances
✅ More opportunities for tax planning

❌ More responsibilities & paperwork
❌ Higher accounting costs
❌ Must comply with Companies House & HMRC rules

👉 Best if you:
- Are earning more consistently
- Want to grow your business
- Want better long-term tax planning

---

⚠️ The biggest mistake I see?

People opening a company just because “everyone else is doing it” 👀

But starting a company too early doesn’t always save money.

💬 Not sure whether you should stay Sole Trader or switch to a Limited Company?
DM me “STRUCTURE” and I’ll explain it simply based on your situation 👍

😳 SELF-EMPLOYED? LOOK AT HOW MUCH TAX YOU’RE REALLY PAYING (2026/27)

Here’s the reality based on current tax + NI rates:

💸 Earn £30,000 → Pay ~£4,532 tax
💸 Earn £50,000 → Pay ~£9,732 tax
💸 Earn £80,000 → Pay ~£22,289 tax
💸 Earn £100,000 → Pay ~£30,689 tax

---

⚠️ Now here’s the part most people don’t realise:

Your effective tax rate increases FAST

- Up to £12,570 → 0%
- £12,570 – £50,270 → ~26%
- £50,270 – £100,000 → ~42%
- £100,000 – £125,140 → 🚨 ~62%
- Over £125,140 → ~47%

Yes… you read that right

💭 What this means for you:

Working more doesn’t always mean keeping more

If you don’t plan properly, a big chunk of your hard-earned money
is going straight to HMRC

💰 £97,070 in tax allowances — are YOU using all of them?
Most people don’t even know these exist. Here’s what the taxman lets you keep tax-free every single year 👇
✅ £20,000 — ISA allowance
✅ £12,570 — Personal allowance
✅ £60,000 — Pension contributions
✅ £3,000 — Capital gains
✅ £1,000 — Savings interest (basic rate)
✅ £500 — Dividends
That’s nearly £100k sheltered from tax — legally, every year.

Spoke to a builder this week who said:

“I’m turning over good money… but I’ve got no idea where it’s going.”

After a quick review we found:
– Missed expenses
– No job tracking
– Tax building up in the background

This is more common than you think.

Once fixed, everything becomes clearer:
✔ Profit
✔ Cashflow
✔ Tax position

If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone.

😳 SELF-EMPLOYED? LOOK AT HOW MUCH TAX YOU’RE REALLY PAYING (2026/27)

Most beauticians & freelancers only look at income…
But the real question is 👇

👉 How much are you actually keeping?

Here’s the reality based on current tax + NI rates:

💸 Earn £30,000 → Pay ~£4,532 tax
💸 Earn £50,000 → Pay ~£9,732 tax

👉 More income doesn’t automatically mean more profit

I see the same pattern over and over again in both industries:

💅 Nail techs / lash techs / beauty freelancers
📱 Digital marketers / social media freelancers

The cycle looks like this 👇

* You get more clients → you get busier
* Your income increases → but your bank balance still feels unclear
* Small expenses get ignored (tools, ads, supplies, software, rent)
* Then tax season hits → and it becomes a shock 😅

📊 The problem isn’t that you’re not earning enough
📊 The problem is you can’t clearly see where the money is actually going

💭 A key mindset shift:
When you’re self-employed, you’re not just “working” — you’re running a mini business

And there are 2 things that decide whether you feel in control or constantly stressed:
✔️ Cash flow clarity
✔️ Expense tracking & awareness

⚠️ The difference between struggling and stable freelancers:

* One waits until year-end to deal with finances
* The other reviews monthly and plans ahead

💬 If you’re a beautician or digital marketer:
Don’t just focus on making more money — focus on understanding your money

Because once you understand your numbers…
👉 you take control of your business instead of guessing it
Leave a message “CONTROL” or message us if you need a simple cashflow template to understand your business more !
