How can we close the gender wealth gap?

It starts with better conversations around money.

Women often face unique financial challenges — from career breaks to smaller pension pots and lower investment participation. That’s why accessible advice and financial education matter more than ever.

Confidence, knowledge, and long-term planning can change outcomes.

Proud to be featured in The Times discussing the gender wealth gap — an issue still impacting women’s financial security across the UK.

From career breaks and unequal pay to confidence and access to advice, there are real reasons this gap persists. But there are also real solutions: start early, talk openly about money, and build financial plans that evolve with you.

My passion for this work started young — helping my mum navigate her finances during her divorce. It showed me just how powerful the right support and guidance can be.

That’s why I’m committed to helping women feel confident, informed, and in control of their financial futures.

A huge thank you to Holly Thomas for giving me a voice and capturing this so beautifully.

Grateful to be part of this important conversation — and to keep pushing for change.

We have a new Labour Government!!

To some this will be 👍 , to others, it will be 👎 and many more will be 🤷‍♀️

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR YOUR MONEY?

As this graph illustrates if we look back in time over 70 years then UK stocks have trended upwards ⬆ no matter who is in power.

Investors are rewarded for time in the market 📈

The companies that we invest in are focused on serving their customers and growing their business, regardless of which government is in charge.

According to Labour’s manifesto they are seeking to kickstart economic growth by delivering a new partnership with businesses to boost growth everywhere, so by implication we are all batting on the same side. 🙌

Happy Friday, Come on England! ⚽

Hello – is it me you’re looking for?

Are you fed up of going from pillar to post to work out the best financial plan for you?

You work hard for your money and you want to ensure your money works hard for you.

We all know that life is not a rehearsal but trying to get to the answers that are specifically right for you and working out an action plan feels like wading through treacle.

Does your accountant say you need an IFA and your IFA say you need a broker but your solicitor says you need a mortgage adviser 😱WHATTTTTT?

You don’t know where to turn so you carry on with day-to-day rigours of life suppressing all of these ideas and carrying on regardless?

We can help you, calming your mind and bring laser-like focus.

How?

For those that don’t know Jon is my husband and we’ve been together longer than we haven’t if you see if what I mean.

Jon ran his own successful accountancy practice for 8 years which he sold. We were ships passing in the night and had two young kids and never anytime for each other – so we took our own medicine/advice to achieve our best life and put all our eggs into the Butterfly Financial Planning basket. This means we are now working as a team in all aspects of our life rather than separately.

We are now a hot-smoking powerhouse couple, and Jon’s accountancy and tax hat gives us the edge. He provides business consultancy services included in our package so we can make the right decisions for you. 🔥

Our overall job is to

• Join up the dots for both you personally and the business
• Answer your burning questions about what to do with your hard-earned cash.
• Provide solutions that are bespoke to you.

Because of Jon we can take you off the treadmill and provide a complete and coherent analysis of the here and now and project forwards.

If we need to involve another expert then with your permission we will match your needs and even your personality with the right professional, furnish them with a summary of your position and objectives, so that they are onboard with you even before you speak to them.

Ultimately our aim is to be your point of contact on your financial journey through life.

What burning questions do you have around pensions?

This is your opportunity to ask them.

I am going to be talking all things pension with my Midlife Money Conversation friends on Friday. In the past when talking about this subject people have said I have put the light on in a dark room for them.

This is sample of some of the questions I often receive:

• When is too late to start a pension?
• How will I know if my pension is sufficient?
• When can I take my money?
• How can I take my money?
• What happens to my pension when I die?

What is your question? Please share it with me and I’ll do my very best to answer it.

WHAT DO WE NOT KNOW ABOUT YOU?

Would you Adam and Eve (believe) it?

Something which I tried to disguise, particularly in my business conversations.

Was that I am born and bred in Thamesmead.

With all THAT received pronunciation.

For those that don’t know, this London suburb is cut off one side by the Thames and on the other via a dual carriageway and is perhaps most famous (or infamous) for being the set for A Clockwork Orange. When I was brought up it was, you know, a bit Dot Cotton (rotten!).

However, I worked hard to imitate something much closer to a Windsor accent (and married a Berkshire lad!).

I was always happy to disclose that I was born at Greenwich District Hospital. In my world this meant I was from Greenwich not Thamesmead right?

Rightly or wrongly I was acutely aware of the so-called class differential and developed an inferiority complex because of it.

I’d like to think that is all gone now. I speak how I speak (though my children speak much ‘better’) and I’m proud of my upbringing. My mum and my nan were refugees to the UK and Thamesmead is where they built a new life …. these ARE the Brass Tacks (facts).

Your regional accent should not define you, it’s how you act that does.

Are pensions risky?

A lot of people come to me feeling nervous about pensions

I get it

They don’t fully understand what they are and they weren’t ever part of the maths curriculum at school, were they?

Pensions are not tangible; you can’t see or touch them, they’re not exactly a hot gossip topic with friends and what’s more, you have to log in to take a look!

Unlike property, you don’t really understand how your money is invested and you’ve heard stories of peoples’ pensions fall dramatically just when they were needed most.

You may have also heard that when you pass your spouse will get nothing from your pension.

And that is before the infamy surrounding Robert Maxwell and the circa £440 million pilfered from his own publication’s pension scheme. You rarely hear anyone say something good about pensions, do you?

I’m here to make this simple for you –

1) A pension is simply a long-term savings product
2) A pension typically has great tax incentives.
3) Your loved ones are nominated to receive your personal pension pot in its entirety on your passing.
4) You have super-flexibility in how you take your money. It does not have to be drip-fed on a monthly basis …
5) You can invest in well-known shares and participate in the growth in companies that you are very familiar with.
6) I have spent nearly 25 years of my life working on pensions and I will be there to hold your hand on your investment journey – it’s my mission for you to feel empowered and in control – knowledge is power.
7) And if you still want bricks and mortar - it is possible to invest your pension in commercial property.

Pensions are good …….. But maybe in the same way that a kale, ginger and turmeric smoothie for breakfast is good!

Is your head dizzy from spinning all those plates, from work commitments to household chores, that you worry you are not doing anything well?

You might not be spending enough time with your kids and when you kiss them goodnight you have that twang of guilt only a mum can feel?

Finding this out really helped me: In 1975, stay-at-home mothers spent on average 11 hours per week on primary childcare (defined as routine caregiving and activities that foster a child’s well-being, such as reading and fully focused play). Today, mothers who work outside the home ALSO spend 11 hours per week on primary childcare.

So you can afford to RELAX and go easy on yourself.

To all those fellow working mums out there – we’re smashing this show!

Treat yourself tonight ….. you will be ‘working’ with (or on!) your kids tomorrow!

IS IT TOO LATE TO PAY INTO MY PENSION?

It is tempting for many, who either don’t have a personal pension or haven’t contributed for a long period of time to assume that there is no point in making any further contributions to their pension. You may think that you are too close to retirement, or that your pension pot is too small.

This couldn’t be further from the truth. These days, pensions are very flexible so you could think of it as a tax-efficient long-term savings plan. You can also use this opportunity to look under the bonnet of your pension to see if it’s invested in the right way for you unique set of personal circumstances and retirement objectives.

What’s more, if you have paid national insurance for at least 10 years then you will have an entitlement to a state pension. Currently, a full state pension is £221.20 a week. Most people are pleasantly surprised to see how much they can expect to receive when they look at their state pension forecast.

Isn’t it time you found out where you stand and made careful consideration if further pension contributions are right for you?

What process do you undertake that drives you NUTS?

My son’s birthday is coming up and he loves a freshly baked cake by our local baker – we love supporting independent local businesses and their cakes are officially the WORLD’S BEST and streets ahead of anything you can buy in the supermarket.

So, I go through this merry-go-round each year to procure what I think is a standard request for a Victoria Sandwich cake (no thrills or spills, just the cake):

1. Go to the bakery during opening hours
2. Told the baker was unavailable so can’t confirm the price but could I come back tomorrow?
3. I said no - I want to buy it anyway (I’m not overly price sensitive as it’s his birthday) and so they said they would call me back tomorrow.
4. They wrote my details in a book.
5. No one called back so I chased them and the operator asked which book they had put my order in (I laughed) – Sadly, I didn’t know which book!
6. The lady I saw at the bakers was not there and no one could confirm the price. The baker has now gone home and they are closed on Monday. I was asked if I could call back on Tuesday to which I went 🤯

Why am I telling you this? - at Butterfly, you do not tell us the same thing twice. We make the process frictionless via a combination of communications with you, using tech and also what some have observed as my uncanny memory.

Our clients have commented that working with us is much easier than they anticipated. We believe that it’s OUR JOB to take the strain and if we need to do the following:

· Speak to your pension provider 20 times over.
· Consult with your accountant
· Correspond with your employer
· Adapt our process so it works for your unique set of requirements.

Then we will!

Dare I say it, working with us is ….. a piece of cake!
