💷 Could tougher late payment rules be on the way?

For many small businesses, getting paid on time isn't just frustrating, it can have a serious impact on cashflow, growth, and day-to-day operations.

The Government's proposed Small Business Protections Bill has now been laid before Parliament and includes several measures aimed at tackling late payments from larger organisations.

Proposed changes include:

✔️ A 60-day cap on payment terms for large businesses paying small suppliers
✔️ Mandatory interest on late payments at 8% above the Bank of England base rate
✔️ New powers for the Small Business Commissioner to investigate poor payment practices and fine persistent offenders
✔️ Greater transparency from large companies around their payment performance
✔️ Protection against withheld retention payments in construction contracts

For many SMEs, these changes could be a significant step towards fairer payment practices and improved cashflow certainty.

The Bill still needs to progress through Parliament before becoming law, but it's certainly one to watch.

When costs increase, profit doesn’t usually disappear overnight, it erodes quietly.

Materials become slightly more expensive. Energy costs creep up. Supplier prices rise. Wage pressures increase. Individually, these changes may feel manageable. Collectively, they can significantly impact margins.

That’s why understanding your gross and net profit margins is so important.

Margins show you where money is really being made, and where it’s leaking. They help you identify which services or products are most profitable and which may need reviewing.

In times of rising costs, protecting margin is about sustainability, not just profitability.

If you haven’t reviewed your margins recently, it may be time to look a little closer at where your profit truly comes from.

🎟️ VAT Cut Announced for Children's Activities and Family Attractions

Families could see lower prices this summer thanks to a temporary reduction in VAT on certain children's meals, tickets, and family attractions.

From 25 June to 1 September 2026, VAT will be reduced from 20% to 5% on qualifying purchases as part of a government initiative to support household budgets and encourage spending during the school holidays.

The reduced rate applies to:
✔️ Children's meals in restaurants
✔️ Children's and family tickets to cinemas, theatres, exhibitions and shows
✔️ Entry to attractions such as amusement parks, farms, museums, zoos, adventure parks and soft play centres

The government expects businesses to pass the VAT saving on to customers through lower prices.

If you operate in the hospitality, leisure, tourism, or attractions sector, it's worth understanding how these changes could affect your pricing, ticket sales, and VAT reporting obligations.

👉 Read the full article to learn more about which businesses qualify and how the temporary VAT reduction will work in practice.

Complex international tax matters and HMRC enquiries require precision and calm communication.

Behind the scenes, having everything in order makes all the difference.

Do you know exactly how much your business needs to earn each month just to cover its costs?

It’s a simple question, but one that many business owners can’t answer with certainty.

Your break-even point is the level of income required to cover all fixed and variable costs before you make a profit. It’s fundamental. Yet without calculating it properly, pricing decisions can be based on instinct rather than data.

When you understand your break-even figure, everything becomes clearer.

You can price more confidently.
You can assess whether growth targets are realistic.
You can see how changes in costs or revenue will impact sustainability.

It removes guesswork from decision-making.

If you’re unsure what your break-even point is, or haven’t reviewed it recently, it may be worth revisiting. A clear understanding of your numbers provides a stronger foundation for growth.

“Traditionally modern” isn’t just a tagline.

It reflects how we combine experience, ethics, and relationship-led service with up-to-date systems, digital tools, and forward-thinking advice.

The traditional element means:

• Professional standards
• Integrity
• Long-term client relationships
• Reliable guidance

The modern element means:

• Digital efficiency
• Real-time reporting
• Proactive tax planning
• Strategic advisory input

It’s about respecting what works while embracing better ways of working.
Professional without being distant.

Approachable without losing rigour.

If you’re looking for accountants who combine established values with contemporary thinking, that balance is exactly how we work.

“Part of your business.”

That phrase perfectly captures what long-term advisory support should feel like.

It’s not just compliance, it’s involvement, awareness, and partnership.

Tax planning works best when it’s proactive.

Waiting until deadlines approach limits flexibility. Decisions become reactive rather than strategic. Opportunities are reduced.

When conversations happen earlier in the financial year, more options are available. Income timing can be considered. Investment decisions can be structured thoughtfully. Allowances and reliefs can be reviewed properly.

Often, even a short discussion well before year-end can significantly influence outcomes.

Planning ahead doesn’t mean overcomplicating things. It simply means creating space to choose the best route rather than accepting what’s left.

If you haven’t reviewed your tax position recently, starting the conversation early could make all the difference.

If you’ve ever nodded through a financial explanation without fully understanding it, you’re not alone. And it’s not your fault.

Accountancy can be technical, but communication shouldn’t be confusing. Figures, forecasts, and tax planning should be explained clearly and calmly, without jargon or assumptions.

Understanding your numbers transforms how you make decisions. It builds confidence. It removes hesitation. It allows you to ask better questions.

Good advice isn’t just accurate, it’s understandable.

If your financial conversations leave you more confused than confident, that’s something worth changing.
