🎉 Six Years in Business – Lessons Learned (and Still Learning!) 🎉
Six years ago this week, I decided to combine my 30+ years of professional experience and long term desire to pursue a life of business ownership.
Ekstra Accounting Solutions Ltd was born.
Ambitious or just a crazy notion when you turn 50 !!
Since then, I’ve learned many things about how to survive and thrive as a small business owner and what a journey it’s been!. I learned so many skills that I never had before
6 years on, I can honestly say that running a business is one of the most rewarding, challenging, and transformative experiences you can have. I do not regret my decision in the slightest. I would never go back to being employed.
Don't get me wrong, it’s tested my resilience and stretched my comfort zone. It has also taught me way more about myself than I ever imagined.
I recently came across an article sharing six key lessons from another business owner, and it really resonated because so many of those lessons mirror what I’ve learned myself.
Here are a few truths that stand out from my own six year journey as a business owner:
💬 Learning to say no — not every opportunity, client, or project is the right fit, and saying no is actually o.k. I have really struggled with this one but getting better.
💬 Recognising who values what you do — Learning to spot the clients who appreciate your expertise and the ones who don’t. Only last week I had to terminate a client something that impacted me a lot
💬 Not comparing yourself to others — your path is unique; focus on your own progress rather than someone else’s pace. Sometimes its hard to watch others progress at twice the speed without wondering how is that done !
💬 Playing the long game — success is built through consistency, patience, and persistence.
💬 Letting go of perfection — progress beats perfection every time. Someone once told me Version 1 is always better than Version 0.
💬 Setting boundaries — because sustainable success requires space to recharge and reflect. This is probably the most important one, making time for yourself because without you there is no business
I’m grateful to every client, past and present, who has trusted me and helped me reach this milestone, to my allies and associates who are always there to get me through the tough times, Thankyou.
Each collaboration, challenge, and success has shaped both my business and my personal growth.
Entrepreneurship isn’t just about running a business, it’s a journey of growth, resilience, and constant learning.
👉 I’m planning to turn these reflections into a longer article, so I’d love to hear from others:
What’s one lesson you’ve learned on your business journey that’s really stuck with you?
Here’s to continued learning, growth, and the next chapter! 💫
