The National Minimum Wage increased on 1 April 2026. Are your payroll records up to date?

It's not just about updating the hourly rate. Employers often get caught out on:

➡️Apprentice rates — the lower rate only applies in year one or under 19
➡️Unpaid working time — training, travel between sites, on-call hours
➡️Deductions that bring effective pay below NMW

HMRC can issue fines of up to 200% of any underpayment and from April 2026, the new Fair Work Agency will be consolidating enforcement further.

Annual exemptions don't roll over indefinitely
