💷 We’re in the black. Keeping more money in your pocket - and less with HMRC.

Most limited company directors either overpay themselves in salary or rely too heavily on dividends. But the way you structure your income can make a real difference.

Here’s a commonly used tax-efficient approach for taking £60,000 from a limited company in 2026/2027:

• £9,100 salary
✔ Below the National Insurance threshold
✔ No employee or employer NI
✔ Still counts towards your State Pension qualifying year

• £50,900 dividends
✔ Taxed at lower rates than salary
✔ No National Insurance
✔ First £500 tax-free allowance applies

Estimated outcome:
• Total tax: ~£7,500

Compared to taking £60,000 as salary:
• Tax + NI: £13,000+
• Potential saving: ~£5,500

⚠️ Figures assume no other income and will vary depending on individual circumstances.

We’re qualified accountants, and we only work within fully legal, compliant tax rules - no shortcuts, just smart planning.

💰 Here’s a sobering fact: 82% of small businesses fail due to cash flow problems 😳 Not because they aren’t profitable - but because they run out of cash at the wrong moment.

Cash flow is simply the movement of money in and out of your business 💸 But managing it effectively is where many business owners struggle.

Here’s what good cash flow management looks like:

📌 Know your numbers – Understand exactly when money is coming in and going out each month 📊
📌 Invoice promptly – The sooner you invoice, the sooner you get paid ⏱️ Set clear payment terms and stick to them
📌 Forecast ahead – Plan for quieter months, big expenses, and VAT bills before they arrive 📅
📌 Chase late payments – Don’t be shy. Outstanding invoices are your money - go get it 💪
📌 Keep a cash buffer – Aim to have at least 3 months of operating costs in reserve 🛡️

At In The Black Ltd, we produce detailed management accounts that give you a real-time picture of your cash position 📈 We help you spot problems before they become crises - and identify opportunities you might be missing.

We’re not here to baffle you with spreadsheets. We sit down with you (virtually or in person), walk you through the numbers in plain English 🗣️, and make sure you feel confident and in control.

📢 Think being a company director means just ticking an extra box on your tax return? Think again.

If you're a director completing a Self Assessment tax return, you'll need to provide additional information about your directorships, including:

✔️ Whether you're a director during the tax year
✔️ Whether the company is a close company
✔️ Company registration details
✔️ Dividends received (including £0)
✔️ Your highest shareholding percentage during the year

Importantly, this is not a new requirement for all directors to file a tax return. However, if you already need to submit one, these additional disclosures will be mandatory.

One area likely to cause confusion is calculating shareholding percentages, particularly where companies have multiple share classes or ownership changes during the year. HMRC's guidance states that directors should report the highest percentage held at any point during the tax year.

Another key point: don't leave fields blank. Even if you received no dividends or hold no shares, you must enter zero where required. Missing information could result in penalties!

Now is a good time for directors and advisers to start gathering the relevant information to avoid last-minute issues and ensure returns are completed accurately.

💬 If you have any questions about the new requirements, or need support with preparing and filing your Self Assessment tax return, get in touch with our team. We're here to help you understand what's required and ensure your return is submitted accurately and on time.

💷 Important Change for Savers from April 2027

From April 2027, banks and building societies will be required to collect your National Insurance number. This will enable HMRC to automatically identify savings interest that exceeds your Personal Savings Allowance and collect any tax due through your PAYE tax code.

This is part of a wider move to improve the reporting and taxation of savings income.

With interest rates still higher than in recent years, more people are finding themselves exceeding their tax-free savings allowances without realising it.

What this means for savers:

• HMRC will be able to automatically match savings interest to taxpayers.
• Interest above your tax-free savings allowance may be identified more easily.
• Any tax due could be collected through your PAYE tax code.
• More people may become aware of tax liabilities on their savings income.

Don't get caught out.

✅ Understand how the April 2024 changes may affect your savings.
✅ Learn legitimate ways to reduce tax on savings interest.
✅ Review your options before the new rules take effect.

The good news? There are legal and effective ways to reduce the tax you pay on savings interest.

📩 Want to understand how these changes could affect you and what steps you can take? Send us a direct message today.

If you’re only looking at your business finances once a year when your accounts are due, it’s easy to feel like you’re always a step behind 😬

A lot can change in 12 months. And without regular financial insight, it’s hard to know what’s really going on in your business until it’s too late to easily fix it.

That’s where management accounts come in. They give you a clear, up-to-date picture of how your business is performing throughout the year, usually on a monthly or quarterly basis.

They help you understand things like:
• Are you actually making a profit once everything is accounted for? 💰
• What does your business really own vs owe? 🧾
• Is your cash flow healthy and sustainable? 💸
• Which numbers really matter most for your business right now? 🎯

When you have that clarity, you can:
• Spot problems early, before they grow ⚡
• Make decisions with confidence, not guesswork 🚀
• Understand what’s driving profit (and what isn’t) 📈
• Feel more prepared when speaking to banks or investors 🏦

Because clarity leads to better decisions. And better decisions build stronger businesses 💪

If you want more clarity in your numbers, we’d love to chat.
