The Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit (CGEB), starting in spring 2026, provides tax-free, one-time, and ongoing, quarterly payments to over 12 million low- and modest-income Canadians to help with rising costs. This enhanced GST/HST credit offers a 50% one-time top-up in 2026, followed by a 25% increase for five years starting July 2026.

Key Details of the Program:
Payment Structure: A one-time payment (by June 2026) followed by enhanced, indexed quarterly payments.

Target Audience: Low- and modest-income individuals and families, specifically aimed at those already receiving the GST/HST credit.

Amount Estimates (2026-27): A family of four could receive up to $1,890 this year (roughly $1,400 annually thereafter), while a single person could get up to $950 this year (roughly $700 annually thereafter).

Usage: The funds are not restricted to groceries; they can be used for any essentials, including rent, transit, or health expenses.

Eligibility: Determined automatically by the Canada Revenue Agency based on the previous year's tax return; no separate application is required.

This benefit is part of a broader federal strategy to tackle food insecurity, which also includes strengthening supply chains, supporting domestic food producers through tax changes, and implementing unit price labeling.

Tax season is officially on the clock!🧾

Here are some tips to help you prepare for tax season:
- Sort out receipts and expenses (especially if you have a business); and categorize it.
- March 2, 2026 is the deadline for contributing to your RRSP for the 2025 tax year.
- Log in to your CRA My Account to ensure you remember your password. Re-setting the password can be a pain and it's best to avoid the long wait time if you do it early.

Tax season is officially on the clock, with the CRA confirming it will start accepting 2025 tax returns on February 23, 2026. Canadians who file online and use direct deposit could see refunds arrive in as little as two weeks. The CRA is urging people to prepare now by logging into their CRA My Account, updating personal information, and making sure sign-in details still work.

Starting February, all users will also need a backup multi-factor authentication method to access their accounts. Paper filers should expect much longer waits, with processing times closer to eight weeks. For Toronto residents counting on a refund to offset high living costs, filing early could mean faster cash back.

GST/HST Credit

Eligibility
- at least 19 years old
- A Canadian resident for income tax purposes during:
- The month before the CRA makes a payment and
- At the beginning of the month the CRA makes a payment.

CRA normally makes GST/HST credit payments in July, October, January, and April.

How to apply:
In most cases, all you have to do to receive the GST/HST credit each year is file your taxes, even if you have no income to report.

New residents of Canada must complete a form to apply for the credit.

How much you can expect to receive:
Your GST/HST credit payments are based on the following:
- Your adjusted family net income
- the number of children under 19 years old that you have registered for the Canada Child Benefit and the GST/HST credit.

You could get up to:
- $496 if you are single
- $650 if you are married or have a common-law partner
- $171 for each child under the age of 19

Be sure to keep your personal information updated to avoid underpayments or overpayments. An increase of your adjustment family net income could affect your payments.

The deadline for most Canadians to file this return is April 30, 2023.

Since April 30, 2023, falls on a Sunday, your return will be considered filed on time if the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) receives it, or it is postmarked, on or before May 1, 2023.

If you or your spouse or common-law partner are self-employed, you have until June 15, 2023, to file on time. Filing your return before the respective deadline will allow you to avoid interruptions to any benefit or credit payments you may be entitled to.

If you have a balance owing, your payment is due on April 30, 2023. Your payment will be considered on time if the CRA receives it, or a Canadian financial institution processes it, on or before May 1, 2023.

Happy Easter everyone 🐣🤍

First Time Home Buyers’ Tax Credit

A non-refundable tax credit was enacted as part of the 2009 Federal Budget, based on an amount of $10,000 ($5,000 for taxation years prior to 2022, increased by federal 2022 Budget) for first-time home buyers who acquire a qualifying home after January 27, 2009.  The home is considered to be acquired once it is registered in your name in accordance with the land registration system or other similar system applicable where it is located (in Canada).

The year of acquisition is the year in which the tax credit can be claimed.

The tax credit is based on a maximum of $10,000 per qualifying home.

Eligibility for the Home Buyers' Tax Credit

To be eligible for this credit, you must not have lived in another home owned by you or your spouse or common-law partner in the calendar year of the home purchase or in any of the four preceding calendar years.

Who Claims the Home Buyers' Tax Credit?

The credit can be claimed by the individual who acquires the home, or by the spouse or common-law partner of that individual, or can be split between spouses.

Note :  If you owned a home that you did not live in (e.g., you rented it out), you may still qualify for the tax credit.

Timeline for getting your refunds

A refund can only be issued after you file your tax return. This is why it’s important to do your taxes every year. It’s the only way to get the refund you may be entitled to.

The CRA’s goal is to send your refund within:
* 2 weeks, when you file online
* 8 weeks, when you file a paper return

Note: These timelines are only for returns that meet the filing deadline.

The CRA may select your return for a more detailed review. If this happens, it may take longer to process your return and issue any refund.

Ensure that you are signed up for a direct-deposit to get your refund faster.

If you are not signed up for direct deposit, the CRA will mail you a cheque to your mailing address.

The CRA will not send you payments by e-transfer or bitcoin.
