Your BAS is due and you can't pay. Here's what to do β and what not to do. π
01 β Don't ignore it.
Ignoring a BAS debt doesn't make it disappear. It triggers general interest charges (currently 11.38% p.a.) and puts you on the ATO's radar for follow-up action. The earlier you respond, the more options you have.
02 β Contact the ATO early.
The ATO has a Small Business Support line and an online payment plan tool. Reaching out before the debt escalates shows good faith β and it matters when they're assessing your case.
03 β Request a payment plan.
The ATO regularly approves payment plans for businesses experiencing genuine cash flow difficulty. Interest still accrues, but penalties are reduced when you engage proactively. You can apply online through ATO Online Services or through your tax agent.
04 β Let your tax agent negotiate for you.
A registered tax agent can contact the ATO on your behalf, present your circumstances professionally, and negotiate a payment arrangement that works for your cash flow. We do this regularly for Gold Coast businesses β it's far less stressful than going it alone.
The worst thing you can do is nothing. Get in touch today.
