What's the real constraint on growth? For a lot of businesses, it isn't capacity or cash. It's whether the team is ready for what's next.

Auto Tech Group Melbourne could have moved premises 15 years ago when they outgrew Malvern Road. Instead, the search for the right site became time well spent, building the people who'd carry the business forward.

Matt Webb and Marcus Zammit have built a team where two apprentices have since become shareholders, and they've recently opened their new Weir Street workshop.

The lesson we keep seeing: invest in your people first, and the bigger moves get a lot less daunting. We're proud to have been part of Auto Tech's journey since 2022.

There's been plenty of discussion about negative gearing since the Federal Budget. One detail worth knowing is that the proposed changes are based on when a property was acquired.

Under the current proposal, if you owned a property before Budget night on 12 May 2026, the new quarantine rules would generally not apply, even if the property is rented out in the future.

Building a new home is one of the most exciting things you can do. But financing a new build works very differently from buying an established home, and it pays to understand how before you start picking tiles.

When you build, most lenders will offer a construction loan rather than a standard mortgage. Instead of receiving a lump sum upfront, the funds are released in stages as each phase of construction is completed. You only pay interest on what has been drawn down, which can make a real difference to your cash flow while the build is underway.

It is also worth knowing that building can work out cheaper than buying established. Stamp duty alone can add significantly to the cost of an existing property, and a new build gives you the freedom to choose your own finishes from the ground up.
